YPG Update

The 2018-2019 NAIOP SoCal YPG Program is well underway. We are full speed ahead on planning more exciting events to educate, develop, connect and elevate the future leaders of our industry!  The New Year kicked off in April as the torch was passed from our prior chair, Brad Schmitt, whose vision, energy and creativity will be a lasting legacy to the program. All of us sincerely appreciate his commitment to YPG.

Harnessing the strong momentum from last year, we started off 2018 with an impressive new class attending its April weekend retreat led by Dr. Julie Chesney. Since then, the class has had four meetings with guest speakers such as Ray Lawler of Hines, Rob Jernigan of Gensler and Jana Turner of RETS Associates.  This reflects the program’s focus on helping our young professionals develop a heightened sense of self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Our curriculum committee, led by Michael Chukwueke, has an exciting remainder of the year planned.

The YPG Alumni Committee is focused on our strategic goal of promoting diversity in all that we do as we plan both educational and social events that bring together all NAIOP SoCal members.  We are proud to share that five of the chairs or co-chairs of our nine subcommittees are female and/or minority.  We are also focused on identifying more female minority speakers for future classes, meetings and panels.

Our signature summer event, the Y Games, is scheduled for Friday, September 28 at Newport Dunes. The theme will celebrate the best of Hollywood movies, TV and celebrities. We expect another large turnout and competition!  Be on the lookout for future events that will include our annual philanthropy event, a CREW/ULI/NAIOP YPG networking mixer, our Kick-Off the New Year Event and the 3rd Annual Leadership Summit.  In addition to these large events, our LA subcommittee has been hosting monthly meet-ups for YPG alumni and Developing Leaders in order to strengthen our involvement in the LA area.  Follow us on Instagram and connect with us on Linked In to stay in the know.

Many of our YPG alumni continue to achieve great things. We are proud of Drew Huffman, Hines; Chris Tipre, Trammel Crow; Anthony Delorenzo, CBRE; Jim Singleton, Bascom; and Amir Sadr, Cox, Castle & Nicholson who all received the Connect Media Next Generation Award.  They have all been strong contributors to our program. Also, a big shout-out to Chris Drzyzga with Voit and Matt Milich with Brasa Capital Management – they were two of only seven recipients selected by NAIOP Corporate to receive this year’s national Developing Leader awards.  Well-deserved kudos to all!

Finally, I would like to thank our 2017-2018 Sponsors.  Last year was a record year, and we would not be able to implement our leadership-driven curriculum or high-caliber events without the financial support of each and every sponsor.  Our 2018-2019 Sponsorship campaign is now underway, led by our Vice Chair Brooke Birtcher Gustafson. We hope to continue to raise the funds necessary to maintain our strong tradition.
