KEYNOTE SPEAKER A. Alfred Taubman, Founder Taubman Centers, Inc. 2009 Distinguished Executive-in-Residence*
A pioneer builder, innovative real estate developer and respected philanthropist, Alfred Taubman has led a varied and colorful life and has become one of America’s most successful entrepreneurs, active in numerous business and philanthropic initiatives. With Taubman Centers’ 25 regional shopping malls in operation today and several under development, Alfred Taubman may not have invented the modern shopping center but, in the words of The New Yorker, “he perfected it.” Mr. Taubman has served as a director of Manufacturers Bank of Detroit, Chase Manhattan Bank of New York, United Brands, R.H. Macy Co., Getty Oil Company, and Sotheby’s Holdings. He was chairman of Sotheby’s from 1983 to 2000 and chairman of the Irvine Company from 1977 to 1983. Taubman’s life experiences and business philosophy can be summed up in one phrase: Threshold Resistance. Understanding and defeating that force – breaking down the barriers between art and commerce, between shoppers and merchandise, between culture and popular taste – has been his life’s work. Join us for a “fireside chat” as he shares the challenges, opportunities and lessons learned through his long and rewarding career.
*The Center for Real Estate at UC Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business is pleased to announce the launch of its new 2009 Distinguished Executive-In-Residence Program.
